Writer and motivational speaker Rachel Simon's widely acclaimed
memoir, Riding the Bus with My Sister, is a profoundly engaging
story about two very different sisters. Beth has developmental
disabilities and spends her days riding city buses. Rachel is a
busy author and professor at Bryn Mawr College. Beth convinces
Rachel to spend a year riding the buses-a year that changes both
sisters? lives.
The book was made into a Hallmark Hall of Fame Presentation
starring Rosie O'Donnell and Andie MacDowell. Anjelica Huston
directed. It aired on May 1, 2005 on CBS.
Rachel is a motivational speaker for the public and community
transportation industry, the disability community, schools and
businesses focusing on diversity issues, and people interested in
changing their own lives. She is a recipient of Secretary Tommy
Thompson?s Recognition Award from the US Department of Health
and Human Services. Her memoir has won a TASH Image Award
for positive portrayals of people with disabilities, an American
Book Award for outstanding literary achievement from the Before
Columbus Foundation and a Dr. and Mrs. William Bell Distin-
guished Service award for dedication to community transportation.
